OpenAI Exec Drops Bombshell: We Might Buy Google Chrome!
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, says it would be interested in buying Google’s Chrome browser – if the government forces Google to sell it.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s head of product for ChatGPT, shared this during Google’s antitrust trial in Washington, D.C. When asked if OpenAI would consider buying Chrome, he said, “Yes, we would, as would many other parties,” according to Bloomberg.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has accused Google of using its power unfairly in search and advertising. As part of the case, the DOJ wants the court to make Google sell its Chrome browser. A judge ruled last year that Google broke antitrust laws, but Google plans to fight the decision.
Chrome is a big part of Google’s business. It controls about 61% of the browser market in the U.S. and helps drive traffic to Google’s search and ads.
Turley said that combining ChatGPT with Chrome could create a “really incredible experience” and show people what an “AI-first” internet could feel like. He also warned that big tech companies like Google can block tools like ChatGPT from reaching users by controlling browsers and app stores.
“Real choice drives competition. Users should be able to pick,” he said.
Experts say it’s still unclear whether the judge will force Google to sell Chrome. But if it happens, companies like OpenAI might be allowed to buy it – unlike bigger players such as Meta, which might be blocked by regulators. Tech writer Ben Thompson noted that owning Chrome could give OpenAI a huge boost and help start its own ad business.
